Motherhood is filled with incredible joy, but it can also bring changes and challenges that affect you physically, mentally, and emotionally. For many women in Singapore, postpartum hair fall or hair loss is one such change. Rest assured, this increased shedding is completely normal and is typically temporary for most new mothers. But if you’re having concerns about your postpartum hair condition, read on to learn more about it and what actions you can take.
Understanding Postpartum Hair Loss
During pregnancy, elevated oestrogen levels keep your hair in its growing phase for longer, often resulting in thicker, more voluminous locks. There’s also more blood circulating throughout your body which delivers more nutrients to your follicles. However, this effect is temporary.
After delivery, your hormone levels plummet, signaling a large number of hair follicles to enter the resting (telogen) phase all at once. This synchronised shift leads to noticeable hair shedding, typically starting around three to four months postpartum.
While seeing more strands than usual on your pillow or hairbrush can be alarming, especially after experiencing luscious pregnancy hair, it’s a common occurrence that affects a significant number of new mothers.
The Postpartum Hair Regrowth Timeline
The good news is that postpartum hair regrowth is a natural process!
While the intensity of hair fall can feel overwhelming at first, you can generally expect to see significant hair regrowth within 6 to 12 months as hormone levels stabilise and your hair density normalises. You might notice new, shorter hairs emerging at first which will gradually thicken and lengthen over time.
However, it’s important to emphasise that every woman’s body responds differently. Several elements play a crucial role in how quickly and effectively your hair recovers after childbirth:
- Hormonal Fluctuations: As your body stabilises to its pre-pregnancy hormonal balance, your hair cycle will also normalise.
- Nutrition: Your body needs ample nutrients to recover from childbirth and support new hair growth. Vitamin, mineral, and protein deficiencies can hinder the process.
- Stress: The demands of new motherhood, including sleep deprivation and emotional adjustments, can significantly increase chronic stress. Learn how stress can contribute to female hair loss.
- Overall Health: Adequate sleep, proper hydration, and general well-being are vital for hair health as well as your overall recovery.
Some women may notice a hair texture change with the new growth appearing wavier, curlier, or straighter than their pre-pregnancy hair. You may also experience oily scalp and hair as your scalp recalibrates to your new hormonal cycle.
Supporting Postpartum Hair Regrowth

While patience is key as your body recovers, there are proactive steps you can take to encourage hair growth and support hair regrowth after pregnancy:
- Nutrition: Prioritise a balanced diet rich in protein, iron, zinc, biotin, and vitamins A, C, and E: building blocks for strong, healthy hair. Think lean meats, leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and colourful fruits. If you suspect dietary gaps, discuss the potential of supplements with your doctor to ensure they’re safe, especially if you’re breastfeeding.
- Scalp Care: Treat your hair and scalp with utmost gentleness. Use mild, sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners. Avoid aggressive brushing, tight hairstyles that pull on the hair and excessive heat styling. If you notice oily hair or changes from your pre-pregnancy hair (e.g. curly hair reacting differently to curl care products), adjust your products accordingly.
- Stress Management: New motherhood is undeniably stressful but finding healthy ways to manage it is vital for your overall health and hair. Incorporate short bursts of relaxation and don’t hesitate to seek support from your partner, family, or a support group.
